The DEI Division celebrates difference and supports human rights. At the same time, we are guided by the AOM policy on taking stands , which prohibits leaders from issuing public statements in the name of the Academy — including its Divisions, Interest Groups, Journals, and Committees — regardless of individual or collective leadership positions.
In accordance with this policy, several statements previously shared on our AOMConnect page have been removed. These statements addressed world events and issues including:
- The reversal of the Affirmative Action decision
- The political climate and attacks on DEI
- The Dobbs decision
- The Iran movement
AOM governance policy states that taking a formal organizational stand may occur only under rare and exceptional circumstances that pervasively threaten the existence, purpose, or functioning of the Academy.
